Biotechnology Applications in Aquaculture
The overall goals of the curriculum are to:
To increase students' general awareness of biotechnology uses in the field of aquaculture.
To acquaint students with general laboratory skills used in the field of aquaculture biotechnology.
To promote a balanced, informed attitude toward the potential benefits and concerns of using biotechnology practices in aquaculture.
To increase students' awareness of and readiness for aquacultural biotechnology careers.
Intended Audience:
The activities of this currciulum are geared to students of varying academic abilities in grades 8-12. The activites are appropriate for both urban and rural educational settings.
Teachers with a basic understanding of aquaculture principles and experience culturing aquaculture organisms will find this curriculum most useful. Lessons and laboratory exercises can easily be infused into units on agriscience, animal science, and biotechnology.
Key Components of the Curriculum:
The activities are designed to be interdisciplinary, incorporating science, math, social studies, and language arts subject areas.
The activities are developed to meet the National Voluntary Occupational Skills Standards for an Agricultural Biotechnology Technician.
The activities can be integrated with the school-to-work initiative, tech-prep program, and career passport/portfolio preparation for higher education.
Each unit contains suggestions for further study and evaluation tools.
Abstract:
Applications of Biotechnology in Aquaculture has been developed for agriscience and science teachers with all levels of experience in aquaculture and has materials that will be of interest to teachers who are interested in biotechnology although not 'infusing' aquaculture.
This material was designed to introduce teachers and students to the major concepts of biotechnology, its applications in aquaculture, and describes how aquacultured organisms are being used in the biotech industry to make various new products or run various processes.
This module is complete with 'hands-on' practical classroom exercises, covers career opportunities and contains the most current biotechnology references and lists of laboratory materials, equipment and suppliers.
