HOW TO MANUALS FOR AQUACULTURE

Part I. Understanding Recirculating Aquaculture Systems

Basic Biological Processes

Recirculating aquaculture systems are generally defined as production units that reuse the culture water more than once by putting it through a filtration process that removes fish waste contaminants (Figure 1).

Most recirculation systems move water through the filtration loop from 1-2 times each hour. Where water of the right temperature is plentiful, discharge from the systems are as much as 10-15% of the total volume each day. In areas where water must be conserved due to its availability or temperature, an average discharge is from 3-5% daily.
